Dog Food Brands - There are So Many to Choose From

When trying to decide what the best type of dog food to feed your dog is, it can get very confusing. There are just so many dog food brands to choose from. How is it possible to decide which is the best for your dog? Let's see what we can do to narrow down the healthiest dog food.

First of all you want to avoid anything that is sold in places like Walmart and feed stores unless it happens to be one of the premium brands. Years ago the feed stores only sold VERY cheap food at something like 7 dollars for a 50-pound bag of dog food. This is NOT good quality food. Avoid at all costs. But nowadays you can find some of the premium brands in the feed stores, brands like Wellness, Innova, Canidae, Natural Balance, and other holistic brands of food. But if they are only selling the real cheap stuff, forget it. Shop elsewhere.

Most cities will have at least one pet shop where you can go to purchase some top quality dog food brands. Where I live I am lucky to have many such pet shops, some big franchise types and some smaller mom and pop types stores that have a great variety to choose from of natural and premium dog foods, raw foods, frozen, granular, kibble, canned, dehydrated, just anything you might like for your pooch.

But now you have found places to buy these foods, but what to buy? Well you can just select something and see how your dog does on it. That works quite well.

Or you can do some research online and visit the message boards, forums, and groups like the Commercial Dog Food Comparison group on Yahoo Groups. You'll be able to find others who have tried the same foods you are considering, and you can ask them specific questions about the dog food brands you're interested in.

One other thing - you will hear people say to change your dog over slowly but I have never done that and never had a problem.
